Definition: backlight

The light source in LCD TV and monitor screens. The backlight used to come from a fluorescent lamp (see CCFL); however, the lamp was superseded by LEDs and MiniLEDs. In contrast, OLED displays and their derivatives generate the backlight from the OLED layers themselves (see OLED and QD-OLED). See LCD, LED TV and QLED.

LCD TV and Monitor Backlights
Most of today's LCD screens use an LED backlight. However, MiniLEDs provide more precise lighting than full-sized LEDs. See MicroLED. (Image courtesy of Ron Mertens.)
