Definition: Pegasus

(1) The code name for Windows CE.

(2) For an earlier motherboard, see Pegasos.

(3) Spyware from Israel-based NSO Group that can be secretly installed in smartphones and monitor virtually everything the user does in the device. Almost impossible to detect without forensic analysis, Pegasus can not only capture every message and phone call, but it can track a person's location and turn on the mic and camera. Introduced in 2011, Pegasus has been used successfully by governments to prosecute high-profile criminals. Unfortunately, it has also been used to spy on journalists and political opponents. See spyware.

Secrets and Intrigue
A leak of 50,000 phone numbers gave a team of journalists from around the world a lot to investigate. With plenty of intrigue, secrecy and detail, this 2023 book by Richard and Rigaud reads like a spy novel. Also in 2023, PBS FRONTLINE featured an explosive two-part TV documentary titled "Global Spyware Scandal: Exposing Pegasus."
