A typewriter or printer mechanism that holds the platen and controls paper feeding and movement. On earlier typewriters, the carriage moved the platen as each letter was typed. Starting with IBM's Selectric models, the carriage became a stationary part of the unit, the same as is found on dot matrix computer printers. See
