Definition: Intel-based system

A computer that uses a CPU from Intel, such as a Core, Xeon or Pentium chip. Also known as an "x86-based system." The x86 designation comes from the first PC, which used the Intel 8086 chip. The 8086 is the ancestor of all that followed: 286, 386, 486, Pentium, Core, Xeon, etc.

Intel Only or x86 Only
When contrasting Intel x86 CPUs from other x86 chip manufacturers, use the term "Intel based." When contrasting x86-based computers, no matter who makes them, with the non-x86 world (Sun, IBM, ARM, etc.), use the term "x86 based." See x86, AMD and Intel Mac.
