A handheld device that provides communications between two or more parties using dedicated frequencies over short distances, a few miles at best. Walkie-talkies have no dial-up procedure; they are always on and activate instantly by pressing a button and talking (see
push-to-talk).
Long Distance Walkie-Talkie
Always-on communications are also provided by specialized mobile radio (SMR) services for police, taxis and other purposes. Having acquired many SMR operators in the U.S., Nextel was first to combine walkie-talkie capability with its cellphone service. See
personal radio service,
SMR and
Nextel.
A Walkie Talkie Pair
With a five mile range, this rechargeable walkie-talkie pair from Gaswei also receives FM, the NOAA weather channel and FRS family radio service. Gaswei makes a variety of two-way radios that support FRS and GMRS (the two UHF walkie talkie frequencies in the U.S.). See
FRS and
GMRS.
