Definition: FRS

(Family Radio Service) An unlicensed personal radio service in the U.S. launched in 1996. Using FM modulation in the UHF band (462 and 467 MHz), FRS transmission does not interfere with CB radio (27 MHz) or Citizens Broadband Radio (3.5 GHz). All FRS channels are shared with GMRS users. Combo FRS/GMRS radios are available. A license is not required for FRS use. See GMRS, CBRS and personal radio service.
