Definition: rack mounted


Electronic equipment that is bolted into a cabinet with a standard width of 19" and 24". All types of electronics come in rack-mounted cases, including servers, test instruments, network and telecommunications components, storage drives and A/V equipment. Datacenters have from dozens to hundreds of rack-mounted cabinets. See blade server.

One, Two and Three Rack Units
The vertical height of rack-mounted devices is specified in rack units, and one rack unit (1RU or 1U) is 1.75 inches.






A Rack of Betacams
In datacenters and professional studios around the world, equipment is routinely rack mounted. These Betacam videotape recorders were in a TV studio, and each unit took 5U of rack space.
