Definition: minifloppy

The formal name for the once-ubiquitous, black floppy disk encased in a 5.25"-wide plastic jacket. Introduced by Shugart in 1978, it superseded IBM's 8" floppy. Although used extensively, it gave way to the 3.5" floppy (microfloppy) in the mid-1990s.
