Definition: menu bar

A row of menu titles. In Windows, the menu bar is at the top border of the application, and the File menu is generally the first selection. In the Mac, the menu bar always appears at the top left side of the screen and not the application. This menu location dates back to the first Mac (then the Macintosh) in 1984, which had a 9" screen and only one program visible on screen. Today's 27", 32" and 43" monitors allow numerous apps to display at the same time, and the Mac menu bar can be a long distance from the application itself. This peculiarity confuses Windows users the first time they use a Mac. See Macintosh and File menu.
