Definition: MicroLED

(MICRO Light Emitting Diode) An LED display technology that uses very small pixels. Also known as "mLED" and "µLED," MicroLED is a true LED emitter like OLED rather than a backlight source for LCD TVs, renamed LED TVs.

Wall-sized MicroLED displays were demonstrated by LG and Samsung in 2018, comprising several square modules that fit together. In 2019, Samsung introduced a 75" MicroLED TV. For the world's largest MicroLED TV, see C SEED. See LED, OLED and LED TV.

Emitters vs. Backlights
LED and MiniLED are backlights to LCD displays. A MiniLED variation known as "QD MiniLED" adds quantum dots to the backlight (see quantum dot). MicroLED, on the other hand, is a color emitter and not a backlight. (Image courtesy of Ron Mertens.)
