Whereas virtual assistants and other AI services use the cloud for the majority of the computing, edge AI runs in a local device. Also called "on-device AI," the ever increasing capabilities of inexpensive microprocessors enable machine learning and AI processing (inference engines) to take place in a user's machine.
One of the major advantages of edge AI is that all processing takes place in-house and is thus less vulnerable to eavesdropping than queries and responses traversing the Internet to a cloud service. A disadvantage is that edge AI misses out on the additional knowledge gained in the cloud from the huge amounts of data that are captured. See
