Definition: edge AI

(edge Artificial Intelligence) Artificial Intelligence (AI) functionality at the edge of the network. Whereas virtual assistants and other AI services use the cloud for the majority of the computing, edge AI runs in a local device. Also called "on-device AI," the ever increasing capabilities of inexpensive microprocessors enable machine learning and AI processing (inference engines) to take place in a user's machine.

One of the major advantages of edge AI is that all processing takes place in-house and is thus less vulnerable to eavesdropping than queries and responses traversing the Internet to a cloud service. A disadvantage is that edge AI misses out on the additional knowledge gained in the cloud from the huge amounts of data that are captured. See inference engine, AI and edge.
