Definition: data set


(1) A collection of related data. Originating in the mainframe community, the term data set is used today as a generic description of a database, which may include multiple tables. A data set may also refer to some other data structure and sometimes to a single file or collection of files. See database and file.

(2) In earlier AT&T terminology, a data set was a telephone modem.
