Definition: cryptographic module


The combination of hardware and software or firmware that supports security functions in a computer or electronic system. A critical security parameter (CSP) is an item of data such as a password or authentication key stored in a cryptographic module. The Federal Information Processing Standards publication FIPS PUB 140-2 details four security levels regarding cryptographic modules. See cryptographic coprocessor, HSM and TPM.
