Definition: alt-right

(ALTernative-RIGHT) An ultra-conservative movement in the U.S. that is not in favor of globalization, immigration and cultural diversity. Also called the "New Right," white Christian males are its predominant constituents. Abbreviated alt-right to embody Internet speak, the movement's philosophy and related information is published online on websites such as Altright and Breitbart. In 2010, Richard Spencer founded the Alternative Right website. The European counterpart is the Identitarian movement, which started in France in the early 2000s. See Parler, Rumble, Gab and alt-tech.

Why This Definition in a Technical Encyclopedia?
The alt-right has made extremely effective use of social media, such as Twitter/X and Facebook. However, because the "alt" nomenclature has been used for decades to identify numerous Internet newsgroups, this alt-right entry is provided to clarify the difference. Alt-right is a popular political movement rather than a category of information. See alt newsgroup.
