Definition: U3


(1) For the SD card classification, see SD card classes.

(2) (You: Simplified, Smarter, Mobile) An earlier platform from M-Systems and SanDisk that introduced the concept of an entirely portable Windows application. Introduced in 2004, U3 evolved into StartKey from Microsoft and SanDisk. See Windows To Go.

Launch and Run Without a Trace
Both the U3-enabled app and user's data resided on a USB drive, and when the drive was removed, there were no altered Registry settings or data left in the computer. A Windows PC was merely a processing engine.

Developing the U3 Program
Applications had to made U3 compliant. Programs that did not use the Registry were wrapped in a U3 header, and those that required the Registry communicated via the U3 programming interface (see API). See USB drive.




Run Anywhere
A U3 app could be run on any Windows PC.
