Definition: Tesla Energy


The sustainable energy division within Tesla. Founded in 2015, Tesla Energy features solar panels and battery storage for both residential and commercial customers. A natural expansion of its battery technology in the electric vehicle market, Tesla Energy is one of the largest residential solar panel installers in the U.S. See Tesla.

Gigafactory Nevada
In the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center (TRIC) in Storey County, Nevada (near Reno), Tesla makes batteries and other EV components for its electric vehicles. Starting operation in 2016, Tesla's semi-trailer trucks are also made in Nevada. It is estimated that nearly a hundred sites were explored to locate the factory; however, Nevada's incentive package was huge, rail access was convenient, and Nevada allows direct sales of Tesla vehicles. Gigafactory New York
Outsourced from the beginning, starting in 2026, Tesla began making its own solar panels in its Buffalo, New York facility, which had been making roof components for solar panels outsourced from Korea and Japan.




Tesla Powerwall
Obtaining energy from solar panels and the grid, Tesla Powerwalls can supply energy to both the home and vehicle. It can also share the car's battery with the home during an outage. (Image courtesy of Tesla.)
