Definition: MPU-401


(MIDI Processing Unit-401) An earlier interface device for personal computers from Roland Corporation that enabled the computer to connect to MIDI equipment. Introduced in 1984, the MPU-401 had interfaces, initially separate but later included on the unit, for the Apple II, Commodore 64, IBM PC and other computers of the day. See MIDI.
