Definition: MP4

An extremely popular digital movie format. MP4 files are supported by most software players and are a common format for movie downloads via the Internet. Blu-ray players and A/V receivers are often capable of playing MP4 movies directly from a USB drive plugged into a front-panel port.

Using the .MP4 extension, MP4 movies are typically compressed via H.264, which is also based on MPEG-4. The MP4 format is actually a multimedia container that holds audio, video, images, animations and menus. See MPEG, H.264, M4V and MP4 player.
