Definition: M4V

An MPEG-4 video file format from Apple that supports digital rights management (DRM). Copy-protected video content from Apple's iTunes store uses M4V, and non-Apple media players may support the format.

The MP4 Equivalent
M4V files are the copy-protected equivalent of the MP4 format, but copy protection is optional. If the video is not protected, the M4V file extension can be changed to MP4 for media players that only support MP4.

M4A Audio
The audio part of an M4V file is Dolby Digital AC-3, and audio-only MPEG-4 files use an M4A file extension. See MP4 and MPEG.
