Definition: RealAudio

An earlier audio streaming technology for the Internet from RealNetworks. Introduced in 1995, a browser equipped with the RealPlayer or third-party plug-in enabled news, sports and other programs transmitted from RealAudio servers to be heard on the user's computer. Encoders and plug-ins were downloaded from RealNetworks' website, and server software was available for a variety of platforms. See RealPlayer.
