Definition: Galaxy Flip

A foldable smartphone from Samsung. Introduced in 2020, the Galaxy Z Flip is one of the first devices with a foldable OLED screen. Reminiscent of the flip phone, which was the generation prior to smartphones, the Z Flip has a 12MP camera with 4K video and 256GB of internal storage. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack or microSD card slot for external storage. The Z Flip 5G came out later in the year with 5G and a slightly faster chip (Snapdragon 865 vs. 855). See flip phone.

Galaxy Z Flip vs. Galaxy Z Fold
While the Flip is similar to a compact flip phone, the Galaxy Fold is like two full-size smartphones hinged at the side with a folding screen. See Galaxy Fold and FOLED.

Z Flip2 and Z Flip3
Flip models have a 6.7" display and weigh 6.5 ounces. In 2021, the Flip3 (bottom) debuted with a faster Snapdragon 888 chip, but the most notable difference was the enlarged cover screen to show more information. (Images courtesy of PCMag.com.)
