Definition: FLOW-MATIC


The first programming language that used English syntax. Under the direction of Grace Hopper, later Rear Admiral Hopper, FLOW-MATIC was created for the UNIVAC I in the 1950s. Hopper also contributed to the CODASYL consortium that developed COBOL, which adopted similar programming syntax. See CODASYL and COBOL.
