Definition: DDR5

(Double Data Rate 5) DDR5 is a main memory chip with shipments beginning in late 2021. Requiring new motherboards, the 64 gigabit chips on DDR5 modules represent a four-fold increase in bit capacity over DDR4. Four-slot motherboards can hold 512GB of DDR5 RAM, while eight-slot boards can hold 1TB.

Prior to DDR5's introduction, DDR5 sometimes mistakenly referred to the graphics version of DDR memory (see GDDR). See SDRAM.
