Definition: Chrome OS


A Linux-based operating system from Google that is designed for Web-based applications and cloud computing. Combined with the Chrome Web browser, the first Chrome OS laptops, known as "Chromebooks," were introduced in 2011. A year later, the Chromebox desktop model was introduced. See Chromebook.

Chrome Tablets as Well
In 2018, Chrome-based tablets debuted, including the Acer Chromebook Tab 10, detachable HP Chromebook X2 and Google Pixel Slate. One major difference from the user's point of view is that Chrome tablets have screen cursors like Windows and Mac, whereas Android and Apple tablets (iPads) do not. See Android fragmentation.
