Definition: Boomerang


(1) A mobile app from Instagram that takes a one-second video and plays it forward and backward in a continuous loop. Boomerang was introduced in 2016. See Instagram and Hyperlapse.

(2) A bi-directional programming language for text formats. Introduced in 2008, Boomerang is able to convert text from one format to another and perform the same conversion in reverse. For more information, visit www.seas.upenn.edu/~harmony.

(3) An add-on to Gmail and Outlook from Baydin, Inc. that lets users schedule delivery of their email messages and receive reminders to follow up. Boomerang includes Respondable, which analyzes the writing to make a response more likely. It measures reading level, positivity and politeness, while paid versions use AI to improve the writing quality.
