The instant messaging capability between BlackBerry phones that allowed pictures and other files to be sent as well as text. To "BBM someone" meant to send a message from a BlackBerry to a recipient with a BlackBerry. BlackBerry Messenger 5 (BBM 5) added a QR code reader to quickly read another person's contact information as well as any QR mobile tag. Introduced in 2012, Version 7 (BBM 7) enabled voice calls over Wi-Fi, which saved carrier per-minute charges. See
