Definition: Am386

An earlier 386-compatible CPU chip from AMD introduced in 1991. Because its frontside bus ran at the same speed as the CPU, Am386 chips rivaled the 486 in performance and were popular among the budget conscious. The first 386-compatible CPU, the Am386 was AMD's own design rather than a second source for Intel CPUs (see Am286). See Am486 and AMD.
