Definition: AoIP

(Audio Over IP) Transmitting audio over an IP network. Although music is streamed from the Internet in IP packets all the time, the playback systems buffer the incoming data to compensate for latency over the Internet. Audio over IP refers to routing and distributing audio created in broadcast studios, which must be distributed in real time without latency. The transition from dedicated T1 and E1 lines to IP packets began in the 2000s at radio broadcasters in the U.S. and Europe.

Livewire, Wheatnet-IP, Dante, N/ACIP, Q-LAN and RAVENNA are some of the major software products for managing AoIP. See AES67.
