Definition: 3LCD

A data projector technology that uses three LCD panels. Developed by Epson in the 1980s and marketed by its 3LCD affiliate, the 3LCD method uses a separate LCD panel for each of the red, green and blue colors. The 3LCD approach is known to eliminate the rainbow effect, which are color fringes that some viewers see at the edges of objects when a single-chip DLP projector is used. The DLP method uses a rotating color wheel to generate the red, green and blue colors. See DLP and RGB.

The Three LCD Panels
White light is beamed through RGB color filters and their respective LCD panels. The colors combine in the prism and go out the projection lens to the screen.
