IBM's high-end mainframe architecture, which provides a control hub for the datacenter. zEnterprise enables IBM mainframes to incorporate IBM Power Systems running the AIX operating system and System x (x86) servers running Linux or Windows into a single integrated management system. The Power Systems and System x blade servers are installed in the zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension (zBX) unit, which provides a high-speed network connection to the mainframe.
The z114 and z196
Introduced in 2010, the first zEnterprise mainframe was the z196. Available in air-cooled or water-cooled models, the z196 supports up to 3TB of RAM and 80 user-configurable processor cores running at 5.2 GHz. Introduced in 2011, the smaller z114 supports up to 256GB of RAM and 10 cores running at 3.8 GHz. The z114 is air cooled only. See
