Definition: xAI

(X.AI LLC) An artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk in 2023. In early 2026, Musk announced that xAI will become part of his rocket company (see SpaceX).

The xAI website states that the organization's mission is "to understand the true nature of the universe." With all the frenzy over AI in the 21st century, such a company mission statement seems quite befitting an Elon Musk creation. Nevertheless, xAI claims to be building the largest AI datacenter in the world, although others have made similar claims (see Project Colossus).

Grok AI
In late 2023, xAI introduced the Grok AI chatbot, which is used to craft stories, do research and answer questions. The Grok model is also available to subscribers of X Premium+, a paid level in the X social network (previously Twitter). Via extensions, Grok is integrated into the Visual Studio development environment (see Visual Studio).

Universal Model for Musk Companies
Grok provides intelligence for self-driving capabilities in newer Teslas, and it integrates into the dashboard for chatbot access and navigation (subscription may be required). Grok also provides intelligence to Tesla robots and SpaceX.

Grok 4 Fast
In 2025, Grok 4 Fast was released, which xAI touted as a game changer. Faster than previous Grok models, developers can adjust how much "deep thinking" Grok should use. However, the deeper the thinking, the slower the reply to the question. Available as iOS and Android apps, Grok 4 Fast can also search the Web and X social media. See Grokpedia and grok.
