Definition: visual sensor network

A network of wired or wireless video cameras distributed throughout a building or outdoor area that provides a continuous surveillance of the environment. A visual sensor network (VSN) presents a coherent picture of the environment to the user rather than just a collection of individual video clips. Preprocessing often takes place within the "smart" cameras before sending the data to a central computer that performs additional processing. See computer vision.
