Definition: watt


A standard unit of electrical power. Named after Scottish inventor James Watt (1736-1819), watts = volts times amps (W=VA). For example, a common 5-watt battery charger is 5 volts and 1 amp (5=5*1). A 10-watt charger is 5 volts and 2 amps (10=5*2). See volt-amps, SI units, volt, amp and RMS.
