Definition: virtual retinal display

(1) For Apple's screen technology, see Retina Display.

(2) A display technology that beams images directly onto a person's retina. In the early stages of development as of 2024, a virtual retinal display (VRD) is expected to become an alternative to external displays in the future. A VRD may also vastly improve eyesight in visually impaired people, and in the coming decades, a VRD contact lens may be an alternative to ordinary display screens. A singular advantage is that such projection systems use much less energy and can produce more realistic images. In other words, "virtual reality on steroids!" See virtual reality.
