Definition: vertical video

A video captured in portrait mode primarily geared for smartphone users, although people also view them on desktop computers. Vertical videos are viewed without flipping the phone into landscape mode.

Because people jump from Web page to page and from app to app without switching their phone's orientation, commercials, entertainment and personal videos are increasingly recorded in vertical mode to grab the user's attention without having to rotate the screen. See portrait and short-form video.

TikTok, Reels and Shorts
TikTok, Facebook Reels, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts are examples of popular vertical videos today. See TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
