An A/V receiver that has built-in upconversion capability. If both the DVD player, A/V receiver and HDTV can upconvert signals, the one that should actually perform the operation is the one with the highest-quality circuits. Turning upconversion off and on in the various units is the only way to test the difference, which may be too subtle to determine. See
