A file that contains only alphanumeric characters (letters of the alphabet, numeric digits and special symbols such as the $ and %. Also commonly called an "ASCII file," because it contains text that is almost exclusively coded as ASCII characters (see
ASCII file). Program source code and batch files are text files. See
