A solid state drive that provides processing in order to lighten the load of the CPU. Aimed at servers, typical computational storage drive (CSD) functions are compression and encryption. Security may also be provided; however, any type of processing can be performed in a CSD. See

The SmartSSD from Samsung
Touted as the first adaptable CSD, Samsung launched the SmartSSD in 2020, which contains an FPGA chip that is programmed for the required tasks. Drives like this can speed up operations ten times and more. Kintex was originally Xilinx's brand of programmable chips; however, Xilinx was acquired by AMD (see
FPGA).
