Definition: storage drive

Hardware that stores data without power until intentionally erased. Since the 1960s, the hard drive has been the computer's internal and external storage units; however, solid state drives (SSDs) are increasingly replacing hard drives and are almost exclusively the storage medium in new laptop computers. Smartphones, tablets and any device with a computer chip employ only SSD storage. See hard drive, storage device, storage vs. memory and computational storage drive.

Not Just Yet
As solid state drives get larger, faster and less expensive, so do hard disk drives. This promo for SSDs dates back to the 1990s.

An External Storage Drive
This one-terabyte (1TB) USB drive is highly portable external storage. By 2017, Kingston Technology debuted a 2TB USB drive. See USB drive.
