Definition: soft proofing

Providing customers with a preview of printed output on screen rather than on paper. Soft proofing provides instant feedback and is useful when many color and content decisions need to be finalized before a hard-copy proof is created. If color match is important, a physical proof, whether traditional, digital inkjet or digital halftone is still necessary to run a job on press. See prepress proof.
