An open-source social network development platform. Introduced in 2016, Mastodon allows anyone to create a social networking feed similar to X/Twitter and Tumblr. Although there is a 500-character limit, each Mastodon instance is developed, controlled and moderated by the entity that creates it. Users may communicate only with others in their community or follow users in other communities.

Mastodon posts (tweets) are called "toots," and reposts (retweets) are boosts.
