Definition: smart vs. intelligent

Smart and intelligent are two terms widely used in the world of technology. They both imply the use of software and/or computer chips, but "smart" has caught on as a prefix for every type of automated device from a smart bed to a smart city. There are more than fifty "smart" definitions in this encyclopedia (see smart). The "intelligent" term is also used but less frequently. Any device with a computer chip is technically "intelligent," but "smart" has become more fashionable. See intelligence.
