Definition: session border controller

Hardware and software that manages real-time voice and video calling. The session border controller (SBC) provides security and control for VoIP and IP video sessions. It is also the common location for tracking and reporting quality of service (QoS).

Sitting at the edge of the network, the session border controller manages the entry and exit points between the carrier and the enterprise. Also residing between service providers, the SBC measures realtime transport protocol (RTP) traffic and collects RTPC data for QoS (see RTP). See VoIP.
