Definition: session border controller

Server software that manages IP voice and video. The session border controller (SBC) provides encryption, routing, security and control for real-time IP packets (RTP packets). It also measures RTP traffic and quality of service (QoS).

Sitting at the edge of the network, the SBC manages entry and exit points between the carrier and enterprise. For example, it routes interoffice calls internally instead of traversing the Internet. See router phone, RTP, QoS and VoIP.
