Definition: semantic markup

Tagging data and text with attention to people with disabilities. For example, Bold and Italics tags are ignored by screen readers, and blind people do not know that the text is emphasized in any way. Therefore, Bold and Italics tags are commonly replaced with Strong and Em tags that screen readers do clarify. Semantic markup is a requirement for ADA compliance (see Americans with Disabilities Act). See semantics.
