Definition: satellite Internet


Internet access via satellites. In 1996, Hughes introduced the first Internet service via satellite and is currently the largest in the U.S. (see HughesNet). Prior to Hughes' entry, a global satellite-based service was planned by Teledesic, but it never came to fruition (see Teledesic). Today, Starlink, HugesNet and Viasat are the three top satellite Internet providers (see Starlink, HughesNet and Viasat.
