A transceiver or emitter in orbit above the earth. Signals are relayed from the earth to the satellite and back again for radio, telephony, TV and financial transactions. A satellite is also the source of signals for GPS navigation and climate monitoring. Satellites are also used for earth exploration (water, minerals, etc.) as well as outer space. Their most pernicious use is surveillance. See communications satellite, space pollution and LEO.
