Definition: RLE

(Run Length Encoding) A simple data compression method that converts a run of identical characters into a code. A rough example might be []36* where [] is a code and 36* means 36 *'s follow. Microsoft included an RLE codec in its earlier Video for Windows; however, other compression methods are far superior for full-motion video.
