Definition: quantum tunneling

The state of a transistor whereby electrons tunnel across the gate from source to drain even though the gate is not pulsed. As the elements of a chip get smaller, quantum tunneling emerges. Chip designs such as FinFETs and GAAFETs are used to reduce the tunneling effect. See GAAFET and transistor.
