Definition: quantum sensor

A sensor that uses the principles of quantum mechanics to detect minuscule changes in motion and electromagnetic fields. Exploiting the energy levels in atoms, quantum sensors are expected to achieve extremely fine levels of precision. A burgeoning field, in 2019, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology placed a diamond-based sensor on a silicon chip, which was considered a breakthrough technology for both quantum computing and quantum sensing.
