Known as a "permissionless network," a public blockchain allows anyone to use the network (buy, sell, lend, stake, etc.) as well as participate in processing transactions by being a validator or miner. Bitcoin and Ethereum are the two largest public blockchains (see Bitcoin vs. Ethereum). Contrast with private blockchain. See blockchain and permissionless.
